What is car insurance?

Car insurance is not only there to reimburse you for damage to your car—it also protects your assets in case you or someone else is seriously injured.

What does it cover?

Collision & Comprehensive

These coverages insure the car itself. Collision coverage reimburses you for—you guessed it—collisions, and comprehensive covers you for most things that can happen to a parked car (hail, theft, vandalism, etc.). Classic/collector vehicle insurance typically pays you more for your car.

Liability

Liability for bodily injury to others while operating a vehicle is among the biggest financial risks in most people’s lives. The good news is that auto insurance is there to protect you. You should seriously consider moderate to high liability limits for your insurance.

Uninsured Motorist

Did you know that one in eight people driving in America does not have insurance? It’s true. If you’re around someone who is bad at insurance and bad at driving, watch out. In case your passengers or you are hurt in an accident, your auto policy’s uninsured motorist coverage will be there.

Medical Payments

Medical Payments coverage is there to make sure you or your passengers get medical attention right away, regardless of fault. In states with “no fault” laws, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage does this. Both coverages can do more than just medical payments, but PIP goes above and beyond to include lost wages.

How much auto insurance do you need?

For starters, you need some insurance to legally drive. 48 states have minimum insurance requirements for liability to other people. Many states also require you to carry uninsured motorist coverage, and some add more coverages.

The most common state minimum for liability limits are $25,000 (per person per accident) and $50,000 (all people per accident). Does that sound like a lot? In the world of bodily injury liability, it’s not. As anyone knows, car accidents can seriously injure people, so blowing by these limits well into six digits can easily happen. INSURANCE-MOD recommends you carry liability limits of at least $100,000/$300,000. Want more? Try $250,000/$500,000. Want even more? Try Umbrella Insurance

Do yourself a favor and maximize your insurance discounts!

Good driver discounts

Fewer accidents and fewer tickets make lower insurance. Drivers with clean driving records enjoy lower insurance cost.

Comparison shop

All insurance companies make your rates a little differently, so you’re probably overpaying if you don’t compare. INSURANCE-MOD makes comparison shopping easy.

Bundle

Bundling is convenient for you and can save you over 10% on your auto insurance. But don’t stick with an insurance company just because you bundled. Shop your policy from time to time and make sure you always have a good rate.

Low mileage

Not driving much lately? Then don’t pay like you do. Part of your insurance application is telling how many annual miles you are driving.

Park in your garage

The debate rages on whether garages are for stuff or for cars. And if you’re a car enthusiast, you’re probably on the right side! Garaged vehicles are less likely to get damaged or stolen, so you will pay less.

Anti-theft systems

Alarms, active and passive devices, vehicle tracking and VIN etching really work, and your insurance company will appreciate them to the tune of some nice discounts.
